Polishing Your Vehicle: Making Chrome, Aluminum, and Steel Shine

What’s the point in having premium chrome, aluminum, and other trim if you can’t see it? Polishing your vehicle trim is easier than you might think, leaving a mirror shine that is hard to beat.

Aluminum is a fairly soft metal, making it easier to polish than steel and other metals. Typically, according to Autogeek, aluminum on a vehicle is actually some sort of alloy and combines with other metals to add structure. Unlike iron, aluminum oxide doesn’t become rust; rather, it becomes a dull protective coat. When you polish aluminum, you want a polish that removes oxidation, tarnish, stains, and water spots in one. Try a polishing compound and compounding pad, and wipe clean with a chamois cloth.

Chrome is a plated metal, making it highly resistant to tough conditions, though it will rust without proper maintenance. Look for a polish that removes oxidation, calcium, lime scale, and green tarnish. Some chrome polishes come as wipes, allowing you to simply scrub away any residues. Chrome is incredibly bright when polished.

Stainless steel sounds like it would resist corrosion, but it can still degrade over time. Because steel is a hard metal, it can be tough to get it to really shine. Try a red paste polish and some old-fashioned elbow grease. Scrub clean with a microfiber towel.

Most of these supplies can be found at a local auto shop, though you can stop by the Shults Service Center for more information on detailing your vehicle.

Ford Police Interceptors Achieve Best Police Car Acceleration

Ford vehicles have long been a favorite among law enforcement agencies. For example, you probably think of a police car any time you see a Crown Victoria. Now, agencies all over the country are falling in love with the latest Ford vehicle, the Police Interceptor.

Ford offers two versions—a sedan based on the Taurus and a utility based on the Explorer.

Recently, in an independent test done by both the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police, the Ford EcoBoost Police Sedan achieved the best police car acceleration and fastest lap times.

“We are proud to maintain our performance advantages, and these validate Ford Police Interceptor leadership,” said Arie Groeneveld, Ford Police Interceptor chief engineer, in a statement. “We love the bragging rights, but for these officers, best-in-class performance is a huge safety attribute. Pursuits that end quickly are more likely pursuits that end safely. This team is obsessed with officer safety.”

Despite having a smaller engine, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost-equipped Interceptor was faster than the 5.7-liter Charger and 6.0-liter Chevrolet Caprice. The Ford Interceptor clocked in a 0-to-60 mph time of only 5.8 seconds.

Here at Shults Ford Lincoln of Wexford, we are proud to know that so many law enforcement agencies trust Ford to provide the best equipment they need to protect and serve all of us.

Real vs. Fake Christmas Trees

If you haven’t already, you are probably planning on putting up your Christmas tree soon. If you and your family are stuck in the real vs. fake Christmas trees debate, we’ll help you put that to rest.

According to the American Christmas Tree Association, “There is no debate. Consumers should feel free to choose either type of tree, or better yet, choose one or more of each! Both types of Christmas trees have very distinctive characteristics and a recent Life Cycle Analysis concluded that neither tree has a significant negative impact on the environment. It really comes down to which kind of tree, or trees, best fits your lifestyle.”

So, there you have it. Discuss with your family and decide if you want to go with a real tree and water it every day and enjoy the natural pine scent, or just put up an artificial one and let it be. With an artificial tree, you have more flexibility with when you put up your tree, since there is no risk of it drying out. You can also use it year after year if you take good care of it. Another reason to choose an artificial tree is if you are allergic to mold and other allergens produced by live trees.

3 Top Reasons People Get Pulled Over

Want to avoid getting pulled over and ticketed? It’s easy, right? Follow the laws of the road. Just in case you need some reminding, here are some of the top reasons people get pulled over…

Equipment violations

Unlike speeding, equipment violations can happen simply from neglect. That’s why it’s a good idea to give your ride a once over every once in a while. According to Edmunds.com, things like expired tags and burned-out headlights cause the most citations for equipment violations.

Driving Like A Madman

This comes in a lot of forms. Maybe you make improper lane changes or roll through a stop sign, maybe you make U-turns whenever you feel like it. The bottom line is you drive like you are the only one on the road. This is definitely going to get you cited.

Speeding

But everybody does it, right? If everyone drove their convertibles off of the Grand Canyon like Thelma and Louise, would you do it too? The truth is that it’s not speeding per se, it’s excessive speeding that is going to get you in trouble. Going a few miles over the speed limit usually won’t catch the attention of our men and women in blue but just know that it can.

Save your money, save your time. Drive predictably and follow all traffic laws in a vehicle that is properly maintained.

Latest Innovations From Ford Focus On Efficiency

Fortune magazine recently shared some wise words from Henry Ford. The inventor and business mogul said way back in 1923, “Be ready to revise any system, scrap any method, abandon any theory, if the success of the job requires it.”

The following are some innovations from Ford that we’ve seen in just the last few years…

PTWA

Plasma transferred wire arc process is an engine technology that allows Ford to forego the heavy, cast-iron liners in its aluminum engine. The result is an engine that six pounds lighter. That is an enormous improvement.

Micromill

Originally created by Alcoa, Micromill is an innovative type of aluminum. Traditionally, aluminum was a light metal but prone to easy shaping. Not Micromill. It’s lightweight and strong. Ford embraced the new material and used it in its award-winning 2016 Ford F-150.

Manufacturing Process

It’s not the vehicles themselves that get all of the attention. Ford is consistently revising its manufacturing process as well. In fact, the Ford facility in Dearborn, MI has been revamped over the last decade, with the addition of “new robotics, stamping equipment, chemical and heat treatments, and an aluminum-recycling system.”

Today, the company that Ford started is taking his advice more than ever.

Pollution Prevention Week: Tips to Use Less Gas

The EPA has designated the week of Sept. 21 to 27 as Pollution Prevent Week, a time set aside each year to discuss the ways in which we can reduce the amount of pollutants emitted into the environment around us.

One easy way is to cut down on the amount of gasoline you use, which in turn, will produce fewer harmful emissions. Here are some tips to use less gas:

  • Try to avoid idling, which wastes gasoline even when you’re not driving.
  • It’s also a good idea to avoid stopping and starting whenever possible.
  • Driving slowly takes less gasoline than driving fast, so staying right at the speed limit will keep your fuel economy in check.
  • The heavier your car is, the more gasoline it requires, so it’s a good idea to keep your vehicle free of unnecessary cargo.
  • Of course – you can always try to drive less, or carpool with a friend or co-worker.

Plus, using less gasoline will also save you money! It’s a win-win.

Ford Spider Screen Fights Against Spider Invasions

You might be scared of spiders, but we know someone who is probably more scared—your car. Every year, spiders cause thousands of problems for car owners when they crawl into vehicles’ mechanics and nest. But it looks like Ford might have a solution—the Ford spider screen. This innovative technology prevents creepy crawlies from crawling into your vehicle’s fuel vapor lines, keeping your car running as smoothly as possible.

“Spiders can be a nuisance for our vehicle owners,” said David Gimby, Ford fuel systems engineer. “We studied these species to discern how they nest, then designed an effective device for excluding the larger, problematic spiders from nesting in our cars.”

The Ford spider screen continues to evolve, making sure that fuel vapor lines are clear. This is key to ensuring optimal vehicle performance. This terrific technology can be seen in vehicles across the North American Ford lineup. It will be globally implemented with the launch of the all-new 2016 Ford Focus RS.

Be sure to check it out at Shults Ford Lincoln of Wexford when it launches!
