Ford Autonomous Vehicle Technology Used to Deliver Pizzas

Many pizza companies say they’ll deliver in 30 minutes or less, but can any of them say your pizza will be delivered in a self-driving car? Partnering with Domino’s Pizza, Ford recently began consumer research on autonomous vehicle technologies in the food industry. Though it might sound a bit strange, this is the one of many steps the Ford brand is making toward revolutionizing the car industry.

Ford autonomous vehicle technology is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Currently, the brand is considering how we can better integrate self-driving cars into everyday circumstances—like delivering pizzas. According to Ford, the partnership with Domino’s is part of a larger move to increase its understanding of how self-driving cars can support the movement of people and goods in the US.

“As delivery experts, we’ve been watching the development of self-driving vehicles with great interest as we believe transportation is undergoing fundamental, dramatic change,” said Patrick Doyle, Domino’s president and CEO. “We pride ourselves on being technology leaders and are excited to help lead research into how self-driving vehicles may play a role in the future of pizza delivery. This is the first step in an ongoing process of testing that we plan to undertake with Ford.”

Here’s how it works. A customer orders a pizza and receives a distinct code. They can then track the self-driving car as it moves from their local store to their home. Then, the customer can punch the code into the side of the car and retrieve their pizza from the Domino’s Heatwave Compartment™–a specially designed space in the side of the car.

Although there’s no word yet about whether this technology will be implemented at a Domino’s near our location, it is evidence of Ford’s innovative thinking. At Shults Ford Lincoln Wexford, we can’t wait to see this self-driving technology in action in the near future.
