Ford Creates the First Mobile Wind Tunnel Used for Automotive Testing

When it comes to testing vehicles, Ford puts their lineup up against some of the most hazardous conditions that drivers can face on the road. One such condition is high winds. Recently, Ford found a more efficient way to test their vehicles for resistance against those violent gusts and gales.

According to a Ford press release, Ford has created the first mobile wind tunnel used for automotive testing. Traditional vehicle tests use a stationary wind tunnel. Ford has one such device at their testing location in Allen Park. However, Ford has developed a way to create the same wind effect using more mobile design methods. In fact, the mobile win tunnel can be prepared for transport to another separate location in the span of a single day!

“This project was born from a desire to be the best when it comes to controlling and limiting the cabin noise customers are so sensitive to,” said Bill Gulker, Ford wind noise core supervisor. “And our new mobile wind tunnel saves our engineers time and increases productivity. It’s a fine example of the innovation mindset we’re trying to incorporate into everything we do.”
