Ford does not take innovation lightly. The current automotive industry seeks to equip its vehicles with the latest and greatest technology and safety features. Designers are always seeking new ways to meet the driver’s needs. Ford has done well with this, offering new and modern designs like the 2017 Ford Fusion’s rotary gear shift with the Return to Park feature and other autonomous safety features. In fact, Ford is doing so well at innovation that Ford is the top inventor based on patents and employee submissions for the year of 2016.
The proof is in the numbers. Last year, Ford received approximately 1,500 patents for its employees from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. That was more than any other automaker in 2016. Globally, Ford employees received roughly 3,200 patents. This year was a 25% increase since 2015, and the most patents per year in the 113-year history of the company.
On top of that, there over 8,000 new inventions submitted by Ford employees, a 40% increase from 2015 and a 90% increase from 2014. The record shows that Ford is ahead of the innovation game in relation to its competitors. But the numbers also proves that Ford and its employees are more enthusiastic than ever about finding the automotive innovations that will take driving to the next level.
