Ford Uses HoloLens Technology to Imagine Future Designs

Technology is moving forward faster than ever, and the automotive industry is going right along with it. One of the latest innovations that Ford is using to help its designers is Microsoft HoloLens technology. This is a wearable, mixed-reality device that projects a sort of hologram on top of a physical object, like a car.

By using this device, designers are able to visualize what a new color, shape, texture, or design will look like on a vehicle in a matter of minutes or hours instead of the weeks or months it can take by waiting for a clay sculpture. Ford has been piloting this technology for over a year now.

When a designer is wearing the HoloLens headset, it scans the environment to create a highly-precise mapping of the object and area. This allows it to render hologram images from the correct angle when looking at an object.

“It’s amazing we can combine the old and the new – clay models and holograms – in a way that both saves time and allows designers to experiment and iterate quickly to dream up even more stylish, clever vehicles,” says Jim Holland, Ford vice president, vehicle component and systems engineering.

Here at Shults Ford Lincoln of Wexford, we are excited to see Ford using this innovative technology and can’t wait to see what designs are born from this project.
