Winterize Your Car to Stay Prepared

Cold weather can be particularly rough on your vehicle, one reason why it’s important to winterize your car. From routine maintenance to packing an emergency kit, there are a number of things you can do to prepare for the cold. Here at Shults Ford Lincoln of Wexford, we’ve listed some of the best ways to winterize.

According to the DMV, one of the first things you should do is replace or top off fluids. It’s especially important to check your antifreeze/coolant to ensure that it’s at least a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. You can find a tester at your local auto parts store. You’ll also want to top off wiper fluid with deicer to help you keep your windshield clear.

Next, check your tires. Cold temperatures decrease air pressure, which means you may need to refill your tires this winter. You’ll also want to check tread with the penny test. Place an upside-down penny in the center of your tire tread. If you can see above Abe Lincoln’s head, you probably need new tires.

Finally, pack a roadside emergency kit. You should include basics like jumper cables and a spare tire kit. You’ll also want a first aid kit, blankets, water, kitty litter or sand (for traction on ice), and an ice scraper. You may also want to spring for a collapsible shovel. These are just some of the things you should do to winterize your car to prepare for winter’s worst.
